S.O.S. Authentic Navy Blend

The Legendary Military Breakfast Seasoning

🍳 Few meals in American military history are as legendary, beloved, or memorable as S.O.S. Known affectionately throughout the armed forces as "Shit On The Shingle," this hearty breakfast has fueled generations of sailors and soldiers through early morning watches, training exercises, deployments, and wartime service. While many people associate S.O.S. most closely with the U.S. Navy, the tradition extends across virtually every branch of the military and stretches back through both World Wars, where a filling, economical breakfast was essential for keeping troops fed and ready for the day ahead.

In Navy mess halls, S.O.S. became far more than simply breakfast. It was a daily ritual. As the sun rose over the horizon and sailors gathered in the galley before heading to their duty stations, steaming trays of creamy chipped beef gravy over toast were often waiting. The meal was simple, filling, affordable, and dependable. More importantly, it became part of naval culture itself. Many veterans can still remember the aroma drifting through the chow line long before they could see the serving pans.

While the Navy traditionally prepared S.O.S. using chipped beef in a rich cream gravy served over toast, other branches eventually developed their own variations. Army cooks often substituted chopped beef, ground beef, or other meats while maintaining the same essential concept: a savory gravy served over toast, biscuits, or bread. Across rural America, these military traditions found their way into family kitchens, where similar dishes became known simply as biscuits and gravy, producing countless regional recipes that are still enjoyed today. I remember my Father who served as a battle field chef in WW2 telling me that they would have to some times cook S.O.S. in a collection of borrowed helmets along with brewing coffee from grinds using the helmets as steel pots, cool them down, and wash them before putting back on there heads for battle.

At Ham Towne Spicery, we wanted our S.O.S. Blend to honor the original Naval tradition rather than simply imitate it. To ensure authenticity, we turned to our good friend and shipmate, long time Naval Mess specialist MS2 Swisher, who reviled to us how Navy cooks prepared S.O.S. in ships galleys. Petty officer Swisher translated seasoning measurements originally designed to feed hundreds of hungry sailors into practical proportions that home cooks can use To authenticate The Navy's traditional S.O.S. for small servings.

One interesting aspect of historical naval cooking was the use of ingredients that could help support sailors during extended sea voyages. Traditional recipes often included ingredients not specified by official Navy recipe manuals but added by the chefs to improve the flavors and the two most used ingredients are nutmeg and lemon citrus elements. Our blend continues with that tradition with nutmeg and lemon peel powder, ingredients that not only contribute depth and brightness, but also reflect the practical wisdom found in old maritime kitchens to ad a bit of vitamin "C" for a delicious way to fight scurry among the crew.

Today, our S.O.S. Blend allows you to experience a genuine taste of military food history. Whether you're a Navy veteran reliving memories from the galley, a soldier remembering breakfast in the mess hall, or simply a curious cook discovering this American classic for the first time, this blend helps bring the authentic flavor of one of the military's most enduring comfort foods right to your table.

Want to surprise your favorite Navy veteran some morning soon Grab Our S.O.S. blend and cook them up a steaming plate.  You may notice a tear in their eye after the first taste.

Our Blend Contains The Following Authentic Blend Of Herbs And Spices:

Garlic powder — Black pepper — Lemon peel (powder) — Parsley flakes — Nutmeg.

NOTE: Since Chip Beef is very salty and Chip Beef brands vary a lot in salinity, and of course you can wash a lot of salinity out of the meat if you want to control how much salt to use in preparation. We decided to make our S.O.S. blend salt free so you can salt it to taste while cooking.
